As an automation technician you make machinery and systems work by themselves. You build, program and maintain the controls, sensors and motors that drive everything from production lines to robots. You become a technician who understands electricity, mechanics and programming — and can find the fault when a system suddenly stops.

§What do you do in everyday life?

You typically work in industry or for an automation company. A day can involve pulling and connecting electricity, mounting sensors and actuators, programming a PLC and testing that the system runs as it should. When something causes trouble, you systematically troubleshoot — and you often work closely with both production and other technicians.

  • 01You learn to read electrical and control diagrams.
  • 02You learn to assemble and connect motors, sensors, and control panels.
  • 03You learn to program PLCs and build automatic controls.
  • 04You learn troubleshooting on electrical and mechanical systems.
  • 05You learn about robots, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
  • 06You learn to work safely with electricity and machines.

§How do you get started?

You take a basic course at a vocational school and then apprentice in a company that builds or maintains automatic systems. You alternate between school stays and practice and get apprentice wages along the way. The education is technical and combines electricity, mechanics, and IT.

§The way forward

As fully trained you can work with operation maintenance and construction of automatic systems in industry. With further education you can study for example automation technologist or machine master or specialise in robots PLC programming and industry 4.0.

You build the machines that build almost everything else.
