Safety and quality in automation

Electrical safety, machinery safety and making a system safe to work at.

Automation combines some of the most dangerous energy forms on a workplace: electricity, large mechanical forces and pressure in air and liquid. A system can start unexpectedly, a motor can pull with great force, and a live conductor can be life-threatening. Therefore, safety is not a supplement to the trade — it is part of the craft itself.

§Electrical safety.

Current cannot be seen, and a dangerous voltage is not felt until it is too late. Therefore, work is only done on de-energized installations when it is at all possible: de-energize the installation, lock and mark the switch so no one turns it on again, and measure after that the voltage is really gone before you touch. Protecting against reclosure is a fundamental rule that saves lives.

§Machine safety at CNC

An automatic system can start by itself because a program or timer triggers a movement. This makes moving parts particularly dangerous during service. That is why energy must be removed before reaching into a machine — not just power but also pressure in pneumatics and hydraulics and stored energy in springs and raised parts.

§Emergency stop and safety functions.

Facilities are equipped with safety features – emergency stop, door switches, light curtains, and shields – that should stop the machine if a person is in danger. These features are not for decoration. They must work, be tested, and never be disabled for convenience. Bypassing an emergency stop to get a facility running is playing with people's lives.

§Quality and documentation

Quality in automation is about the system doing the right thing every time — reliably and predictably. It requires careful assembly, well-thought-out programming and thorough commissioning. Documentation is equally important: up-to-date diagrams, program versions and descriptions make it possible for the next technician to understand and service the system.

§Order and system

A well-organized electrical cabinet with neat cable routing and clear labeling is not only neat—it's safe and quick to troubleshoot. When cables are labeled and diagrams match reality, you find the fault in minutes instead of hours. Good organization is therefore both a safety and a quality matter.

A system that can start by itself must be treated as if it will start the second you reach your hand in. So: remove energy first.
