A cookie is a small text file that is stored in your browser. 'Local storage' (localStorage/sessionStorage) is a similar technique where data is stored on your own device. Discebo uses cookies and local storage that are necessary for operation or to remember your settings — and, only if you say yes in the cookie banner, anonymous statistics about how the site is used. We do not use cookies for marketing, tracking across sites or profiling.
For statistics we use Google Analytics 4. It is only loaded if you choose 'Accept all', and then sets cookies from Google (_ga and _ga_*) to measure page views. Google Analytics 4 does not store full IP addresses. We do not use the measurement for marketing, do not create any advertising audiences and do not link it to any advertising account. Google processes data as a data processor for us and may transfer data to the USA; read more at Google.

Necessary vs. functional.
The session cookie (ti_session) is strictly necessary: without it you cannot be logged in and most of the site's functions do not work. The same applies to the cookie choice the short-lived login cookies when logging in with Google or Facebook and the cache that lets the site work without connection. The functional entries remember exclusively your own choices: language reading mode colour theme calculator mode zone subject active case whether a menu stands open playback speed and how far you have got in a checklist a guide or a learning path. None of the necessary or functional cookies are used to track you and none of them are shared with third parties — statistics we only collect with your consent as described below.
Note the difference between the two types of storage: a cookie is sent to the server with each request, whereas localStorage, sessionStorage and cache stay on your own device and are only read by the site's code in your browser. That is why the table shows which type each entry is.
Statistics — only with your consent
To understand how the site is used, and make it better, we collect anonymous statistics about page views. This only happens if you choose 'Accept all' in the cookie banner — if you choose 'Only necessary', we collect no statistics. We use two measures: our own first-party measurement (a random session ID in sessionStorage, dsc_sid, that disappears when you close the tab — your data does not leave Discebo) and Google Analytics 4 (as described above). We register which page you visit, where you came from, and your browser language; if you are logged in, our own measurement is linked to your account, so the activity can be shown in administration.
How to manage cookies
You can at any time change or withdraw your consent to statistics — use the button here, 'Change cookie settings' at the bottom of the page, or Settings → 'Cookies & privacy'. If you choose 'Essential only', we will immediately stop measuring, and the statistics cookies already in your browser (_ga and _ga_*) will be deleted. The visit ID dsc_sid sits in sessionStorage and disappears by itself when you close the tab; it is not used for anything after your withdrawal, and you can clear it immediately in your browser's settings. Otherwise, you can always delete or block cookies and local storage in your browser's settings. Note that if you block the essential session cookie, you cannot log in or use the features that require an account. When you log out, your session cookie is removed automatically, and any pages in your offline cache are deleted.
