From cable installation to the day the system must run
The automation technician's day is rarely the same from one day to the next. One moment you're pulling cables and mounting sensors on a new system, the next you're sitting with a laptop connected to a PLC and editing the program, and suddenly you're called out to a system that has stopped mid-production. The trade encompasses both the purely physical and the purely abstract.

When the hardware is in place, the system must be brought to life. The technician programs or adjusts the PLC so the system does the right thing in the right order, and commissions it: tests functions, adjusts controls, and ensures safety functions work. Commissioning is often where theory meets reality—and where the last errors are found.

§Troubleshooting — the trade's royal discipline
When a facility stops, it costs money every minute. That's why rapid and safe troubleshooting is one of the automation technician's most important abilities. It's not about guessing, but about thinking systematically: what works, what doesn't, and where in the chain from sensor through control to motor is the signal broken?
§To think in signal paths
An automatic system can be seen as a chain of signals: a sensor measures something sends a signal to the control which makes a decision and sends a signal on to a motor or valve. Master that way of thinking and you can follow the signal and find precisely where it goes wrong — whether it is the sensor the line the control or the actuator that fails.
§Maintenance and improvement
Beyond building and repairing, many technicians work with maintaining and improving existing systems. Preventive and condition-based maintenance — where you replace or inspect before something breaks down — saves expensive downtime. And when a system can be optimised so it runs faster, more stably or more energy efficiently, it is also the technician's job to find the solution.
