§ 02 — Become Furniture carpenter and organ builder
This qualification includes two fine wood trades. As a furniture carpenter you build high-quality furniture — tables chairs and cabinets where joints and finishing must be perfect. As an organ builder you build and restore organs one of the most complex instruments that exist. Both are crafts where precision and patience carry the result.
§What do you do in everyday life?
The everyday depends on your specialism. As a furniture maker you work at the bench with fine tools and machines, make precise joints and give the wood a beautiful surface. As an organ builder you work with wood, metal and mechanics to build pipes, windchests and countless parts that make an organ ring pure. Both require a calm, precise hand.
- 01You learn basic woodworking and joinery.
- 02You learn to work precisely with hand tools and machines.
- 03You learn about types of wood and materials in your specialty.
- 04You learn to read drawings and build according to them.
- 05You learn to finish surfaces so the result is beautiful and durable.
- 06You learn to repair and restore — especially important for the organ builder.
§How do you get started?
You start with a basic course and find an apprenticeship within your specialty — at a carpentry workshop or with an organ builder. The education takes from approximately 2 years and 9 months to 3 years and 3 months, where you alternate between school and practice and get apprentice wages along the way. These are specialized trades, so apprenticeships may require you to actively seek them.
§The way forward
As fully trained furniture carpenter you can work at carpentry workshops and furniture production or start for yourself. As organ builder you work at the few specialised organ builders in Denmark and abroad. Both trades provide a solid foundation for specialising deeply in a craft.
“You build something that must be used every day — and last for generations.”
