From planing bench to church room — furniture joinery and organ builder trade's history
How shaping wood by hand and machine grew into both fine furniture and large sounding instruments
As an apprentice on the furniture carpentry and organ builder apprenticeship you learn to shape wood so it both holds and is beautiful. It is an old art. Long before machinery existed carpenters built furniture doors and decoration with hand tools and deep knowledge of how wood behaves. To understand why the trade looks as it does it helps to know the way it has taken.
§The carpenter in the guild era
In the old days the carpentry trade was organised in guilds. You started as an apprentice, became a journeyman and over time could take a journeyman exam and become a master. A piece of furniture was assembled without nails and screws — with tenons, joints and notches, dovetails and glue. Someone who could make a joint that lasted a hundred years was a master. Many of the joints you learn today were refined right here.
§The organ's interior — wind chest, action and pipes
The pipe organ is one of the most complex handcrafted products in existence. It is at once furniture, machine and musical instrument. The organ builder must be able to do the same as the carpenter — assemble wood precisely — but also understand how air is set in motion in a pipe so it produces a pure tone. This is why organ building evolved as a specialized branch of the wood trade where craftsmanship and sound knowledge meet.
§The industry and the machines
With industrialisation came machines: surface planer thickness planer band saw and mill. Suddenly you could make many identical parts fast and cheap. It changed furniture production but it did not remove the need for the skilled carpenter — it moved it. Now the craftsman also had to be able to adjust operate and maintain machines and know when a task is best solved by hand and when by machine.

Today modern carpentry and organ building shops work with both computer-controlled machines and fine handwork. Drawings are made in CAD parts are milled on CNC and at the same time fine-polished adapted and assembled by hand. You must be able to do both and know when one is better than the other.
