How you use digital tools to help your teaching
A day in the workshop rarely involves just sawing wood. It is about planning so the pieces fit together at the end and working in an order that does not create errors you cannot correct. Here is how a typical task moves.
§Drawing and measuring
It starts with a drawing — on paper or in CAD — and a measurement. What needs to be made in what dimensions and from what wood? Before anything is cut you calculate material usage and plan how to get the most out of the boards or blanks. An error here costs expensive material later.
§Material selection
Wood is not just wood. Solid wood works with moisture while sheet materials like veneer and chipboard are more stable. You choose based on what the piece will be used for, where it will stand and how it should look. In organ building, pipes and parts are also chosen based on how they sound.
§Cutting and processing
Now the parts are cut. You trim, plane to thickness, saw to size and mill joints and profiles. Here the rule of measuring twice and cutting once applies. The machines must be set correctly and you always work with the thought that the parts must fit together later.
§Assembly and alignment
The parts are assembled — glued, clamped in vises and pressed until the glue sets. Here it becomes clear whether the measurement and cutting were precise. Dry assembly (without glue) first is a good habit: then you see if everything fits before it's too late. In organ building the pipes are fitted and tuned to give the correct pitch.
§Surface treatment
Finally the work gets its surface: sanding, and then oil, lacquer, wax or stain. The surface protects the wood and determines the expression. It must be prepared well — poor sanding is clearly visible under a glossy lacquer. A final, careful check catches scratches and errors before the work is delivered.
§Why order in the workshop pays off
A tidy workshop and sharp tools are not neat for neatness' sake. It makes the work faster more precise and safer. The one who keeps order and maintains their tools does better work and rarely gets hurt.
