§Study guide — furniture maker and organ builder

Material understanding

You must be able to distinguish between solid wood and sheet material and explain why solid wood moves with moisture while veneer and particleboard are more stable. Understand that wood moves most across the grain — that's the key to durable joints.

Work process

The two specializations

The furniture carpenter manufactures furniture and furnishings; the organ builder builds, maintains and tunes pipe organs. Both build on the same basic wood craftsmanship. Organ building is a small but internationally sought-after niche.
