Photographer

As a photographer you capture moments and tell stories with pictures. You work with light composition and camera and make everything from portraits and advertising photos to reportage and product images. You learn both the technical craft and artistic sense and you become someone who can make a picture say more than a thousand words.

§What do you do in everyday life?

A day can involve setting up lighting in a studio, photographing a customer or product and then sitting and editing the images so they are just right. You plan shoots, talk to customers about what they want and deliver the finished result on time.

§How do you get started?

You start with a basic course and then find an apprenticeship with a photographer or in a company with a photo department. You get apprentice wages along the way, and the education alternates between school stays and practice so you learn the technique and build experience with real tasks.

§The way forward

With the journeyman's certificate you can work as a freelance photographer become self-employed or specialise in for example portrait advertising fashion or reportage. Many combine photography with video and digital processing and you can build on with courses or media educations if you want to go further.
