Bicycle and motorcycle mechanic

As a bicycle or motorcycle mechanic you keep two wheels moving. You service, repair and build bicycles, electric bicycles, motorcycles and mopeds — from adjusting gears and brakes to troubleshooting engines and electrical systems. You become a mechanic who has fingers in fine, precise craft and understands the technology that gets the vehicle moving safely.

§What do you do in everyday life?

You work in a cycle or motorcycle shop or in a workshop. A day involves receiving customers, assessing faults and performing everything from simple service to major repairs. You change tyres, adjust gears, troubleshoot e-bike motors and batteries or take apart a motorcycle engine. You meet customers directly, so service and advice are part of the job.

§How do you get started?

You start with a basic course at a vocational school and then find an apprenticeship at a bicycle or motorcycle shop. You alternate between school and practice and get apprentice wages throughout the education so you learn the trade in practice while earning money.

§The way forward

As fully trained you can work in bicycle and motorcycle shops or start for yourself. You can specialise in for example e-bikes racing bikes or motorcycle tuning become a workshop foreman or build further towards related mechanic trades.
