Bicycle and motorcycle trade history: from wobbling to modern two-wheeled technology
How two wheels and a chain became an entire mechanic's trade
The two-wheeled vehicle is one of the most brilliant inventions in the history of transportation: simple effective and liberating. From the first wobbly wooden bicycles to today's electric bikes and advanced motorcycles there has always been a need for someone who could build adjust and repair them. The bike and motorcycle mechanic is the heir to this tradition.
§The bicycle's birth
The bicycle developed through the 1800s in several jumps. Early non-pedal hobbyhorses were replaced by bicycles with pedals on the front wheel and the famous high-wheelers — with a giant front wheel — followed. The major breakthrough came with the 'safety bicycle' in the late 1800s: two equally-sized wheels, chain drive to the rear wheel and later air-filled rubber tyres. With that the bicycle took roughly the form we still know.
With pneumatic tyres and chain drive the bicycle became both comfortable and efficient and quickly became a popular means of transport. In Denmark the bicycle became part of everyday life for ordinary people and the need for bicycle smiths who could repair and maintain them grew correspondingly.
§The motorcycle is coming
When the combustion engine became small enough it was natural to mount it on a bicycle. Around the end of the 1800s and early 1900s the motorcycle emerged as a bicycle with engine and it quickly developed into an independent vehicle. The motorcycle required a mechanic with more knowledge of engine ignition and drivetrain than the classical bicycle smith.
Throughout the 1900s, the motorcycle became both a work, transport and recreational vehicle, and later came the moped — the small, legally limited motorcycle — which became incredibly popular among young people because it gave freedom and mobility without a car license.
§The moped's popular breakthrough
The moped took a very special place especially among young people. It was cheap could be driven early and for many it was the first taste of maintaining a motorized vehicle themselves. Many mechanics have their first experience from a moped in a shed. This made the moped mechanic a familiar figure and kept a popular screw culture alive.

§The technique becomes more advanced
In recent decades boats have become increasingly technological. Where an engine once could be adjusted with a screwdriver and feel modern engines are largely controlled by electronics and boats are full of instruments navigation charging systems and electrical installations. The boat mechanic must therefore today understand both mechanics and electronics — and be able to diagnose with fault-finding equipment not just with ear and hand.
§The mechanic today
The modern bike and motorcycle mechanic works with everything from the simple city bike to advanced e-bikes and racing bikes, motorcycles and mopeds with electronics. The trade is specialized: a bike mechanic, a motorcycle mechanic and a moped mechanic share basic principles but work with different vehicles and demands. What they all have in common is keeping the two-wheelers safe and reliable.
The advance of the e-bike means that even the bike mechanic today must understand motors, batteries and electronics. The trade thus moves — like car and boat mechanics — towards more electricity and more electronics, while the basic mechanics of chain, gears and brakes remain the foundation.
