The mechanic's day-to-day: service, adjustment and troubleshooting on two wheels
From puncture and gear adjustment to engine service
Whether you work with bicycles, motorcycles or mopeds, every day is about keeping the vehicle safe and running. Some tasks are simple and quick, others require deep technical knowledge — but what they all have in common is that you work with a vehicle where failing brakes or a loose wheel can cost the driver dearly.
§The daily tasks
On the bicycle, the classic tasks take up a lot: patching and replacing tires and tubes, adjusting gears and brakes, lubricating and tightening the chain, straightening bent wheels, and replacing worn parts. On the motorcycle and moped, engine service is added: oil changes, ignition, fuel system, tires, and brakes. Many tasks are routine, but precisely for that reason it is important to perform them carefully every time.
§Adjustment is an art
Much of the work is adjustment: getting the gear to shift smoothly, the brakes to grip precisely, the wheels to run true and the chain to have the right tension. It requires feel and understanding of how the parts work together. A well-adjusted bike is felt immediately — it runs smoothly, shifts cleanly and brakes safely.

§Motor service and troubleshooting
On motorized vehicles, engine maintenance is a core part: oil changes, checking ignition, fuel system, and air filter. When something doesn't work, the same systematic approach applies as in all mechanics: narrow down the fault rather than guess. An engine that won't start may be lacking fuel, spark, air, or compression — find out which before you replace parts.
§E-bikes and electronics.
The e-bike has added a new layer to the trade. Now the mechanic must also understand the motor, battery, sensors and control electronics, and troubleshooting may require reading the system with diagnostic equipment. Batteries must be handled with respect — they contain a lot of energy and must not be damaged. The same applies to electronically controlled motorcycles: electronics have become a fixed part of troubleshooting.
§Test and delivery
For a good repair, it is important that you test the vehicle before it is delivered. Do the brakes work? Does the gearbox shift cleanly? Are the wheels secure? Does the engine turn? A short, systematic test catches errors before the customer does — and is part of the professional responsibility, especially when safety is at stake.
