As a glazier you work with glass in all forms. You cut install and replace glass in windows doors facades glass sections and mirrors and you do everything from repairing a broken pane to large glass solutions in building. You become the craftsperson who brings light and views into buildings — safely and neatly.

§What do you do in everyday life?

You measure up, cut glass to size, fit panes and install glazing units at customers' premises or on building sites. You replace failed sealed-unit glazing, repair frames and work on both small jobs in private homes and large façade projects. It is physical work where precision and safety go hand in hand.

  • 01You learn to measure and cut glass correctly.
  • 02You learn to install windows, glass panels, and glazing.
  • 03You learn about different types of glass and their properties.
  • 04You learn to replace thermopane windows and repair frames.
  • 05You learn to work safely with heavy and sharp material.
  • 06You learn to read drawings and plan an assembly.

§How do you get started?

You start with a basic course at a vocational school and then find an apprenticeship with a glazier company. You get trainee wages along the way and the education alternates between school and practical training so you learn both the theory of glass and the handling in installation.

§The way forward

With the journeyman's certificate you can work in glazier companies with both repair and new building. With experience you can specialise in for example facade and glass installation or eventually start your own business. The trade rewards precision responsibility and good customer contact — qualities you develop throughout your apprenticeship.

Glass is the only building material through which you can both see and stay dry and warm behind — the glazier makes it fit.
