§ 02 — Become Installation contractor, building contractor, and road layer
As a structures worker or paver you help build what everything else rests on. You cast foundations lay sewers and supply lines build roads and squares or set stones and tiles so they lie level and last for many years. You work outdoors often on large construction projects and you can end as a skilled craftsperson who both can read a drawing and operate heavy machinery.
§What do you do in everyday life?
A typical day starts on a building site where you and the crew prepare the day's task. You measure up according to drawings dig out, build formwork tie reinforcement and pour concrete — or you lay base layers and lay paving stones and tiles in patterns. You alternate between craftsmanship and machines and the weather is part of the job.

- 04You learn to lay paving — bricks, cobblestones, and tiles — so it lies flat and solid.

- 06You learn about working environment, safety, and how a crew works together.
§How do you get started?
You start with a basic course at a vocational school, where you learn the basic craft. Then you must find an apprenticeship at a contractor or paving company, where you alternate between school stays and practice out on the sites. As an apprentice you get apprentice wages from the first day and thus earn money while learning the trade.
§The way forward
As fully trained you can work in the contracting sector on everything from residential projects to large road and bridge construction. With experience you can become a crew leader or foreman specialise in for example equipment operation or sewer authorisation or build further with courses and later perhaps a building technical education.
