Concrete layer and brick layer history – from Roman roads to modern installations

How work with soil, concrete and paving became a trade

When you dig an excavation lay a foundation or place a beautiful paving you are part of one of the most fundamental trades there is. Everything we build on top of – houses roads cities – starts with the construction technician's and bricklayer's work in the soil and with the stones. The trade is ancient but the machines and methods you use are modern.

§The Romans and the first roads

The Romans were masters of construction. Their roads, built in several layers of stone, gravel and paving, were so solid that parts of them can still be found today. They also developed opus caementicium – an early form of concrete based on volcanic ash – and built aqueducts, bridges and harbors. The principle of building in load-bearing layers from the bottom, which you still follow, goes back to them.

§Medieval pavers

In the Middle Ages and onwards, streets in towns were laid with cobblestones, often hand-hewn natural stone, laid in sand. The cobbler was a respected craftsman who with the eye and experience laid stones so they lay firm and shed water. Many old city centres still have their cobbled streets and the craft of laying stones in bundles and joints with even seams is largely the same today.

§The industrial revolution and concrete

One of the biggest leaps came with modern cement. Portland cement developed in the 19th century made it possible to produce strong uniform concrete. When people later learned to reinforce concrete with steel — reinforced concrete — they could build larger stronger and more cantilevered than ever before. That changed foundations bridges and entire construction and is still the basis for the structural engineer's work with casting.

§How people worked before

Before the excavator, earthwork was a matter of muscle power: shovel, spade, wheelbarrow, and many hands. Paving stones were hewn and laid by hand, and concrete was mixed manually and carried into place. The work was hard and slow, and large projects required a large number of workers. Experience and skill were everything, because there were no machines to do the heavy work.

  • 04Many craftsmen become self-employed a few years after the journeyman's certificate. Use the time as a journeyman to learn both the trade and the business before you venture into your own company.

§Machine Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the Machinery Directive. It was adopted in 2023 and updates among other things the requirements for digitalization and cybersecurity for new machines.

In the 1900s came the machines that transformed the trade. Excavators rubber-tyred loaders and dumpers took over the heavy earthwork. Vibrators and plate vibrators compressed soil and pavement better than any muscle. Ready-mixed concrete came on a truck with a rotating drum. Work became faster safer and could be done by fewer people – but it placed new demands: one had to be able to operate the machines safely.

§Three specialties one basic trade

Today the education is divided into three specialties with common roots. The construction structurer builds infrastructure in the ground — sewers pipes roads and squares. The building structurer makes foundations floors walls and the load-bearing raw structure in concrete. The brick layer creates surfaces and squares with stone tiles and kerbs. All three build on the same basic knowledge of earth measurement concrete and safety.

§Concrete layer and brick layer today

Today you are a professional who can both read a drawing operate machines calculate falls and quantities and perform solid durable work. The profession combines old craftsmanship with modern technology and what you build must last many years. The long line from the Roman road to the modern motorway is about the same thing: building a sustainable foundation for everything others build on.

What the structural engineer and road layer build is rarely seen — but without a solid foundation nothing else stands up.
