A web developer spends the day writing code that builds and improves websites and web applications. You translate a design into a working site, ensure that it works on both computer and mobile and connect it with data so content can be updated and users can log in. A large part of the work is troubleshooting and fine-tuning so everything runs fast and without errors — and collaborating with designers and other developers to make the whole work out.

Web developer is a vocational qualification, so you typically start on a basic course at a vocational school and then go into apprenticeship in a company where you work on real tasks and get paid during your education. Alternating between school and apprenticeship means you learn the theory and use it in practice at the same time. A good way to get started already now is to play with code on your own and build your own small projects.

As a fully trained web developer you can work in web agencies companies' own IT departments or as independent. You can specialise in the visible part of sites in the underlying or both. If you want to study further you can build on with a further IT education. Web is an industry in constant development so there is always something new to learn and good opportunities to grow with the trade.
