Social and health helper

As a social and health helper you help people manage daily life. You support elderly and citizens who need care so they can live as safely and independently as possible. The training makes you a skilled worker who knows both the practical and the human side — and who makes a real difference every day.

§What do you do in everyday life?

Your day is close to residents often in home care or at a care home. You help with personal care meals and practical tasks and are a safe person to have around. You watch how the resident is doing and report if something changes. You create good moments in everyday life for people who cannot manage everything themselves.

§How do you get started?

You start with a basic course at a vocational school and then find a practical placement, typically through a municipality, where you enter an education agreement. The course alternates between school stays and practice in, for example, home care or care homes, and you get paid while you train.

§The way forward

As a social and health helper you can work in home care at nursing homes or in residential facilities. There is great demand for you and you can build further to become a social and health assistant and from there possibly towards for example nurse or other health professions.
