Security guard

As a security guard you ensure safety and security for people buildings and assets. You keep an eye out prevent problems and step in if something goes wrong. It is a trade where calm good overview and the ability to talk with people are just as important as being able to react quickly when necessary.

§What do you do in everyday life?

A typical day can involve doing rounds monitoring via cameras checking access and being present where needed. You keep an eye on that everything is as it should be write reports and handle situations calmly if unrest theft or an emergency arises.

§How do you get started?

You start with a basic course at a vocational school and then find an apprenticeship in a security or protection company. You get apprentice wages during training and alternate between school stays and practice. You also need to be approved to work in the profession because it's about trust and security.

§The way forward

As a trained security guard you can work in security firms with companies in shops or with events. You can specialise in for example surveillance personal protection or alarm centres become a team leader or build further within security and emergency management.
