Bodywork technician

Bodywork technician is the trade where you repair and rebuild the bodywork on vehicles — the car's body itself of plate, frame and surfaces. You learn to straighten dents, replace damaged parts and bring a car back to looking and functioning as if the damage never happened. It is a craft where precision and eye for detail mean everything.

Much of the work starts with a car that has been in an accident. You assess the damage, disassemble the damaged parts and decide what can be straightened and what needs to be replaced. You work with panel beating, straightening, welding and assembly — and ensure that the bodywork fits precisely together again, so the car is safe and durable.

You typically start with a basic course at a vocational school where you learn the basic craft and safety. You then alternate between school and practical training as an apprentice at a car workshop or bodyshop. You can start after primary school or come to the trade later.

As a body technician you can specialise become a workshop foreman or damage assessor and over time possibly start your own workshop. Skilled craftspeople in the automotive industry are in demand and experience in the trade opens many doors.
