Bus driver

As a bus driver you have the responsibility to get people safely forward day after day. You drive route buses, city buses or tourist buses, keep the schedule, help passengers and ensure everyone has a safe journey. You become a skilled driver with control of both the vehicle, traffic and customer service.

A working day starts with checking the bus and driving it out on the route. You follow the schedule, take on passengers, handle ticketing and keep an eye on traffic and weather. You meet many different people every day, and your calm at the wheel and friendliness at the door mean a lot for how the journey is experienced.

• 03You learn customer service and how to handle many types of passengers.
• 04You learn to check and maintain the bus daily.
• 05You learn first aid and how to act properly in an emergency.
• 06You learn about traffic safety and defensive driving.

You take the programme at a vocational college alternating with training placements at a bus company, and the bus licence and the statutory certificates are a central part of the course. You are paid as an apprentice during the programme. The bus licence can be taken from age 18 when it is done together with the initial qualification, and during the programme you may drive buses nationally for up to 3 years once you have the licence (Executive Order 412/2025 § 7). A calm, even temper is an advantage.

As fully trained you can drive route city or tourist buses for bus companies throughout the country. With experience you can become a driving instructor instructor or route planner or switch to other heavy transport if you take the relevant licences.
