Final check of parking space number

The driver walks through the cabin before departure and notes the registered standing-room number: he reads the sign on the door post and checks that the yellow floor lines mark the standing area — so the bus never exceeds its capacity.

Wheelchair loading with 4-point securing

The driver kneels behind the wheelchair on the marked wheelchair space and secures it with four red cargo straps to mounting eyes in floor and wall while the passenger sits forward-facing with the hip belt on.

Tachograph reading of remaining driving time

The driver inserts the driver card in the tachograph's card slot and reads the green LCD screen's weekly driving time and notes the remaining time before the weekly limit in regulation 561/2006 on a block by the steering wheel.

A driving license for bus (category D) is a commercial driving license for professional bus driving and passenger transportation. With it you can work as a bus driver in public transport, on tourist routes or in private transportation. Here it's not goods but people you're responsible for — and that places special demands on service, safety and calm behind the wheel.

§What do you do in everyday life?

As a bus driver you drive according to schedule or order, take on passengers, keep times and ensure everyone arrives safely. You meet many different people in a day and are often the first face passengers see. It is a job where reliability, overview and good customer service matter just as much as the actual driving.

  • 01You learn to drive a large bus safely with passengers on board.
  • 02You get on top of schedules, times, and route planning
  • 03You develop good customer service and calm handling of many people.
  • 04You understand the rules for passenger transport and passenger safety
  • 05You get a job with set boundaries and contact with many people every day
  • 06You become an important part of the public transport that people depend on

§How do you get started?

The D driving licence is obtained through an approved course, often as an AMU course and there are requirements for age, health and an existing driving licence. The education combines theory about passenger transport and safety with practical driving and ends with an exam. Many traffic companies and bus operators recruit drivers on an ongoing basis so there are good opportunities to find a job.

§Way forward

With experience you can specialise in passenger transport disabled transport or build towards roles as instructor or transport coordinator. The commercial bus licence is also a solid competence that can be combined with other licences if you later want to expand your opportunities in the transport industry.
