The green area (landscaping)

The green area within landscaping is about building and maintaining the outdoor areas we all use daily — parks, gardens, paths, squares and cemeteries. As a landscape gardener, you work with both hard and soft materials: you lay paving, plants, construct water elements and keep green areas in top form. §What do you do in everyday life?

A typical working day is outdoors and practical. You set concrete and natural stone in beautiful, level pavements, build with wood, arrange and maintain beds and grass areas and work with water elements such as ditches and basins. On larger jobs you operate landscaping machines and if you work with weed control it requires a sprayer license. If you work in cemeteries you combine landscaping, maintenance and care with respect for the place.

§How do you get started?

The courses here are AMU courses in the green sector, and they are especially targeted at you who already work or want to work in horticulture and landscaping. If you want to go all the way to qualified craftsperson, it typically happens through vocational education for landscape gardener with basic training at a vocational school followed by apprenticeship in a company. The AMU courses can stand alone as further training or build on existing education so you update your skills or get certificates that the industry demands.

§Way forward

With solid landscape competencies you can work in landscape gardening companies with municipalities cemeteries and maintenance contractors. You can continuously build with more AMU certificates become crew or foreman leader and over time take responsibility for entire projects. Skilled workers in the green trade are sought after and there are good opportunities to specialise.
