Asbestos in the numbers — read them right.

BBR can tell you how many roofs are registered as fibre cement. It cannot tell you whether a particular roof contains asbestos. Here is the difference.

Four things the number does not say

  1. The code says “including asbestos”, not “with asbestos”. BBR roof code 3 is called “Fibre cement including asbestos” and does not distinguish between sheets with and without asbestos. BBR has a separate code, “Fibre cement without asbestos”, for roofs registered as such.
  2. The asbestos field in BBR is almost empty. BBR also has a field for asbestos-containing material. In Silkeborg Municipality, 54 buildings were marked “yes” — against 21,097 with roof code 3 and 4,070 with fibre cement without asbestos. Only 4 had both “yes” and roof code 3. 3. A count is buildings, not roofs or square metres. A carport and a detached house count as one each. The number says how many buildings there are, not how much roof.
  4. A number we have not fetched is not zero. If the register did not answer for a municipality, we write “not looked up” and how many municipalities the number covers. A municipality without a number is not last on a list — it is left out of it.

Only a sample sent for analysis can tell whether a particular roof contains asbestos.
