Work environment safety and ergonomics

Machines cold slippery floors and a body that must last

Work as an intestine technician takes place in an industrial environment with machinery, water, cold and high speed. It is physical work and it requires that you take care of yourself and your colleagues. A good work environment does not just happen — it is something you help create every single day.

§Machines and moving parts

Systematic thinking

§Knives and cutting tools

Sharp tools are part of the trade. A sharp knife is paradoxically safer than a dull one because it does not slip. Learn correct cutting technique always cut away from yourself and colleagues and use the cutting and protective equipment your workplace provides. Keep track of where the tools are so no one is surprised by a blade.

§The wet and cold environment

Intestine processing takes place in damp surroundings with cold water and low temperatures because cold keeps the product safe. This puts demands on clothing and footwear. Slippery floors are a real risk, so non-slip shoes, good housekeeping, and quick spill cleanup are not details — they're what keeps colleagues on their feet.

  • 01Slip-resistant footwear and appropriate, warm clothing
  • 02Gloves that fit the task and the cold
  • 03Good extraction and control of smell and vapours
  • 04Quick cleanup of spills and water on the floor

§Ergonomics — the body must be able to hold up.

Much of the work is repetitive and takes place standing, often in the same posture. This strains the wrist, shoulders, neck and back over time. Ergonomics is about arranging work so that strain is minimised: correct working height, variation in movements and short breaks that let muscles recover.

Good habits in everyday life

  • 01Change position and task, when you can, so the same joints aren't strained all day
  • 02Keep the working height so you don't work with raised shoulders or bent back
  • 03Use short micropause to stretch and shake out muscles
  • 04Speak up early if something hurts — small problems become large if they are ignored

§Smell, hygiene and mental working environment

Work can smell strong and you usually get used to it. But work environment is more than the physical: a good team, clear training and a culture where you help each other and speak up about risks are crucial to you thriving. Dare to ask and dare to say stop if something feels wrong.

§You have the right to safe work

As an apprentice you have the same right to a safe and healthy working environment as everyone else. You are allowed to ask questions request instruction and say no if you are set to something you have not been trained in. The workplace health and safety organisation is there precisely to help — use it.

A good craft is also known by the fact that you can keep practising it — for many years with a body that still can.
