Mouth mirrorThe dental assistant places the mirror ready on the treatment tray and uses it herself for e.g. polishing; the dentist uses it to inspect teeth and mucous membranes and to hold the tongue and cheek away during treatment.
ProbePart of the examination set that the dental assistant prepares sterile; a combined probe and pocket gauge is also used to measure the depth of gum pockets.

AutoclaveThe dental assistant operates the autoclave for daily sterilisation of instruments and checks that the process is valid.
Ultrasonic cleanerUsed for pre-cleaning instruments so they are clean before being packed and sterilised in the autoclave.
Digital intraoral X-ray sensorThe dental assistant positions the sensor correctly in the mouth, triggers the exposure from the X-ray unit and assesses the image quality before it is recorded — a core skill in the radiology part of the programme.
