Career paths for dental clinic assistants

Dental assistant education is a vocational education (EUD) that alternates between school attendance and practical training at a dental clinic, where the student is employed under an apprenticeship agreement. The education is built around a basic course and a main course, where the main course typically spans about two and a half years with alternating school and practice periods — the exact duration may vary depending on whether the student starts with basic course 1 or 2 and what experience the student brings with them.

In the final part of the main course, the student writes a vocational exam in which all the theoretical and practical knowledge from the training is gathered in an independent task based on the internship site. If the vocational exam and other requirements in the main course are passed, the student receives a vocational certificate and can call themselves a qualified dental clinic assistant.

With experience a dental clinic assistant can specialise — for example in radiography and radiation hygiene in prophylaxis and preventive dental care or in administration and clinic management. Some choose later to study to become a dental hygienist a separate education with broader treatment responsibility where experience from clinic assistant work is often a strength. Further and continuing education including courses targeting specific tasks such as radiography prosthetics or surgical assistance is a normal part of keeping your skills updated throughout your career.

At a larger clinic, an experienced assistant may get an administrative or coordinating responsibility — for example, as a clinic coordinator with responsibility for planning, inventory management, and training of new colleagues and students. The broad contact surface with both patients, dentists, and the clinic's operation, which is already part of the education, is precisely the foundation that such roles build on.
