Assistance with dental treatment – four-handed technique
To work in rhythm with the dentist
When the dentist treats, the assistant is the other half of the team. Good assistance aims for the dentist to keep focus in the patient's mouth without looking away for instruments—this is called four-hand technique because four hands work together as one.
§Preparation of the treatment room
Before the patient comes in, the room is prepared: instruments are laid out in the order they will be used, surfaces are disinfected, and disposable items are ready. Good setup means nothing has to be fetched during treatment.
- 01Disinfect surfaces and cover contact points.
- 02Put insulation in correctly where it is included
- 03Prepare suction, water/air and treatment materials.
- 04Receive the patient and assist with correct seating position.
§Instrument handover
Instruments are handed to the dentist so they can be used without turning them. The soiled and clean hand are kept separate, and the handover happens calmly and predictably. With practice it happens almost without words.
§Suction and clear working field
The assistant suctions away saliva water and remnants so the dentist has a clear view and the patient is not bothered. Good suction keeps the work field dry and safe and reduces aerosols.
§The patient in focus
Many patients are nervous. A calm attentive assistant who explains reassures and watches patient comfort is a large part of a good treatment experience. You are often the friendly face the patient remembers.
