If you have not got an apprenticeship when the basic course ends, you can continue in school-based training on 58 programmes. Here are the requirements, the timing, the money and the words the law uses today.
Introduction
School-based training is training at the school instead of in a company. It is for students who have completed a basic course but have not got a training agreement. You keep looking for an apprenticeship while you are in school-based training.
Who can get it?
School-based training is offered to suitable students looking for an apprenticeship once they have completed a basic course that gives access to the programme. You must meet the requirements of suitability and of occupational and geographical mobility: you must be ready to look for apprenticeships in other related programmes and in other parts of the country. The schools call the requirements EMMA: Egnet (suitable), fagligt Mobil (occupationally mobile), geografisk Mobil (geographically mobile) and Aktivt søgende (actively searching).
When?
If you have not got an agreement, school-based training starts 1 month after the basic course ends.
Which programmes?
58 programmes are offered with school-based training. They are listed in annex 6 to the executive order on vocational education and training — e.g. the service assistant programme (no. 44) and the property service technician programme (no. 13). If your programme does not offer school-based training, you need an agreement to continue.
Money: school-based training allowance
In school-based training you do not get a wage but a school-based training allowance. The rate is set by the state and adjusted — ask the school about the current amount.
This many need to find an apprenticeship
The table shows how many started a GF2 each year. Almost all of them need an apprenticeship afterwards.
| Year | Started GF2 |
|---|---|
| 2016 | 51.807 |
| 2018 | 46.787 |
| 2020 | 46.999 |
| 2022 | 39.922 |
| 2023 | 40.635 |
| 2024 | 40.709 |
| 2025 | 39.618 |
You must keep applying
School-based training is a safety net, not the goal. You must keep looking for an apprenticeship, and the school helps you into short agreements and partial agreements with companies along the way. The words changed with the law in 2022, so old papers use other words:
| The old word | The law's words today |
|---|---|
| Work placement (praktikplads) | Apprenticeship place |
| Apprenticeship | Training |
| School practice | School-based training |
| Practical training centre (praktikcenter) | School-based training centre (skoleoplæringscenter) |
