Career and specialisms as sign technician

Car customization, body panels, decorations — and the way forward

When you are trained as a sign technician you have a craft that combines the creative and the technical. The need for signs decoration and visual communication is found everywhere companies want to be seen and therefore there are many directions to go.

§Where can you work?

  • 01Sign and advertising companies that manufacture signs and decorations
  • 02Printing companies and businesses with large format printing
  • 03Companies that specialize in car wrapping and decoration
  • 04Marketing and event agencies with need for physical visual communication

§Areas you can specialize in

With experience you can find your own field. Some become experts in car wrapping where the foil must follow cars in all shapes. Others specialise in large facade signs and illuminated signs in shop and exhibition decoration or in the design part where it is about creating the layout. Many workshops value someone who can both draw and produce.

§The visual eye

Regardless of speciality, it is your sense of the visual that makes you valuable. Typography, colour theory, layout and legibility are things you can keep getting better at. Craftspeople who master both the machines and have a good eye for design are the most sought after.

§Further education

If you choose the qualification as EUX, you combine the journeyman certificate with a higher examination certificate and can thus study further. For some, the path points towards further education in design or graphic communication, where the craft becomes a strong foundation. Others start their own business and build up a customer base.

Common to the paths is that you have learned to take an idea all the way to a finished, physical result. It is a versatile expertise that can be used both in a company and as a starting point for standing on your own feet.
