Basic courses 1 and 2, main course, alternation between school and apprenticeship, duration and entry requirements explained
Security guard is a vocational education where you alternate between the classroom and a real workplace. You are trained while you work and you end up with a final exam that makes you a qualified security guard. Here we go through the whole journey so you know exactly what you are getting into before you apply.
§The two basic courses
If you come more or less directly from primary school, you start on basic course 1 (GF1). It is the broad, investigative half year where you work with general subjects and sniff at what a vocational education is about. GF1 is especially designed for you if you are young and haven't been on the job market for long.
Basic course 2 (GF2) is the trade-specific half-year where teaching begins to be concrete about security and safety work. Here you build the foundation that prepares you to go out on an apprenticeship. Each basic course lasts about 20 weeks at the vocational school.
§Main course — at the security company
When you have passed the basic course and entered a training agreement with a company you begin the main course. This is where you really learn the trade. Most of your time is at the apprenticeship learning by solving tasks with experienced colleagues and occasionally you are called back to school in short school periods where theory is linked to what you experience in reality. The main course spans around a year and a half.
§Total duration
If you count basic training 1 and 2, the entire education lasts up to around two and a half years. The main course itself – from when you have an apprenticeship agreement – takes approximately one and a half years of that time. The exact course depends on your background: for example, if you have relevant experience or previous schooling, parts can be shortened.

§Entry requirements and admission
For them to last longer
A distinctive feature of this particular trade: to get an apprenticeship and work as a guard you must be 18 years old. Guard work is regulated and the industry demands high standards of age and character — so entry differs from many other vocational educations where you can start at the apprenticeship earlier.
Security guard is offered as one specialization — you do not choose between several directions during the course but you can specialize broadly afterwards through further education. More about this in the article on further and continuing education.
