The journeyman's exam — how you prepare

From project task to practical examination and trade certificate

The main course concludes with you taking the journeyman's exam — the exam that shows you master the trade and gives you the right to your professional certificate as a service assistant. The exam is structured in multiple parts, and good preparation is about knowing the structure well in advance, not being surprised by it.

§The structure of the journeyman's test

To complete the apprenticeship, a school exam is held where you develop a written project assignment during the last school period. The assignment is presented for examination, and in addition a practical exam is drawn, which you must perform. Together the two parts show both your professional understanding and your practical skills.

PartWhat does it deal with
Written project assignmentYou describe and reflect on a professional issue from your practice
Oral presentationYou present and defend the task before the examiner and external examiner.
Practical examYou perform a concrete work task and show your method and craftsmanship.

§The written project task

The project task typically starts from a real situation from your internship — a task you have solved, or a challenge you have faced. Choose a topic where you have experience to draw on, and where you can link the practical work to the theory you have learned: hygiene principles, quality standards such as DS/INSTA 800, ergonomics, or chemistry. The closer the link between practice and theory, the stronger the task.

§The practical exam

The practical exam tests whether you can translate theory into action under the conditions the trade is actually faced with. Here not only the result counts, but also the method: that you choose the right means, work in the right sequence, use tools and machines correctly and take attention to your own safety and ergonomics along the way.

§How you help a person with post-traumatic stress

  • 01Start the written task in good time and choose a topic rooted in your own practice
  • 02Practice explaining your professional choices aloud, not just performing them
  • 03Review key concepts like DS/INSTA 800, Sinner's circle and hygiene principles until you can explain them in your own words
  • 04Ask your training company and school how their particular exam is typically structured

The journeyman's exam rewards the one who can explain why — not just the one who can do it right without knowing why.
