How you create a safe and welcoming workplace
From basic course to journeyman's certificate — alternation between school and practical training
Producer education is a vocational education in the main area Technology, construction and transport. It is built as an alternating education where you alternate between attending vocational school and being in training in a company. It is that alternation that makes you both learn the theory behind industrial production and get it in your hands at a real workplace.
§The Four Steps Along the Way
The education falls into a basic course and a main course. The basic course is divided into two parts and the main course consists of a mix of school stays and practice. Together this outlines an education that typically lasts two years including the basic course.
| Part | Where | Approximate duration |
|---|---|---|
| Basic course 1 | Vocational school. | Approx. 20 weeks (half a year) |
| Basic course 2 | Vocational school. | Approx. 20 weeks (half a year) |
| Main course | Company + school stay | Ca. et år |
| Total | School and internship | Approx. 2 years incl. basic course |
Basic course 1 is the broad first half year, which you take if you start directly after 9th or 10th grade. Here you get a taste of the technical field. Basic course 2 is aimed at the producer trade itself, and this is where you really start working with machines, materials and production. The main course is the long practical part in the company, interrupted by shorter school stays.
§Alternation between school and practical training
In the main course you are employed as an apprentice at a company. Most of the time you are at work and learn the trade in practice, while you several times along the way return to school for defined school periods. School periods consolidate the theory and give you the subjects and certificates you need, while the practice gives you the routine and understanding of how production works in reality.
§Entry requirements and admission
For it to look nicer
- 01At least 2.0 on average in Danish and Mathematics from primary school final exam.
- 02Direct entry after grade 9 or 10, if the requirement is met.
- 03If you have been away from school for a period, you can apply via basic course 2 after an admission interview.
- 04You apply via optagelse.dk, where you can also see when the classes start.
§What you are left with at the end
When you've completed the education ends with producer competency and the trade committee issues proof you have the skills the trade requires. Producer education is at one of the short levels in the vocational system but it's simultaneously a good starting point if you later want to build further for example toward industrial operator.
If you know the structure in advance, it is easier to plan: when you are at school, when you are in practice, and what you need to achieve along the way to end up with a completed certificate in your hand.
