Automation and Robots — the Producer's Role in Industry 4.0
How cobots, AMRs and digitalisation change the production floor
Industry 4.0 is the term for the fourth industrial revolution where the digital and physical worlds are connected in production. The concept was formulated over ten years ago and since then many Danish industrial companies have invested in automation projects — from simple robot arms to fully digitised factories.
§Different types of robots on the floor
As a manufacturer you increasingly encounter different types of automation and it is useful to be able to tell them apart.
- 01AMRs (autonomous mobile robots) – drive around on their own and transport materials between stations
- 02Cobots (collaborative robots) — work side by side with humans when properly risk assessed
- 03SCARA robots — fast and precise typically used for assembly
- 046-axis industrial robots — handle more complex movements and tasks
- 05Parallel robots are characterized by very high speed and are typically used for fast pick-and-place tasks where items need to be moved and placed quickly.
§What does it mean for your work?
An analysis from the Engineering Society IDA points out that Danish industrial companies on average can significantly increase productivity if they implement all automation projects that are economically profitable within a short payback period — which shows that there is great automation potential in Danish industry. For the production worker, this means that robots are increasingly taking over the most repetitive and physically demanding tasks, while humans take on tasks that require flexibility, quality judgement and problem-solving.
§Safety around automation
Although cobots are designed to work close to humans all automation requires a risk assessment before it is put into operation and you must always follow your company's instructions for how to move around and operate automated equipment. If an alarm or unexpected stop comes you must follow the set procedure — not try to fix the error yourself if you are not trained to do so.
§Your role becomes broader not superfluous
Automation changes the producer's tasks but does not make them redundant — on the contrary, it places new demands on overview, the ability to monitor multiple processes simultaneously, and on understanding when something is running abnormally. Digital screens, sensor data and alarms become part of the picture you need to read alongside what you see and hear with your own senses.
