The difference between the two specialties and which career paths carpentry opens
The education combines two specializations that share the same foundation—precisely shaping wood—but end up in different places. Here is what each involves.
§The furniture carpenter
As a furniture carpenter you manufacture furniture fixtures and other items in wood — everything from tables and cabinets to special fittings for shops and homes. You work with both solid wood and board materials with hand tools and machinery and you must be able to read a drawing and bring it to life with high precision.
§The organ builder builds, installs, maintains and tunes pipe organs — woodcraft combined with knowledge of sound.
As an organ builder you build install maintain and tune pipe organs. It is woodwork at a high level combined with knowledge of how a pipe forms tone. You manufacture pipes in wood assemble the organ's many parts and learn to tune the instrument so it rings pure. It is a small and specialised branch.
§What they have in common
Both specializations require patience, precision and understanding of wood. Both use joints, surface treatment, measuring and both hand and machine work. Therefore, they share a common basic course before the paths diverge. The person who is skilled at one basic craft has a good foundation for both.
§Career paths
With a journeyman's exam in hand you can work at carpenter shops furniture companies organ builders or with special fittings. Some become self-employed and open their own workshop. Others further educate themselves towards for example technician or design directions or towards management. Woodcraft is also a good foundation for related fields within construction and restoration.
§The lifelong craft
Woodworking is a trade you keep getting better at. The newly trained journeyman knows the basics; the master has built thousands of joints and knows in advance how the wood will behave. If you choose this trade, you choose a craft that rewards experience throughout your life.
