Veneer is very thinly cut or sawn wood that is glued to a stable base. It sounds like a shortcut, but in furniture making, veneering is an entire trade in itself: it makes it possible to use rare, expensive or beautifully grained wood on a surface without the entire piece having to be made of the same expensive wood type. Done right, you can't see the difference between veneered and solid furniture — done wrong you see every bubble and shift clearly.

§What is veneer, and why is it used

Veneer is cut or sawn in thin sheets from a tree trunk so the grain pattern in the veneer sheets often follows each other from one sheet to the next. This makes it possible to assemble several veneer sheets so the pattern flows together forming a symmetrical, decorative expression. The advantage of veneer is twofold: you save on a rare or expensive material and you get a more stable construction because the core board itself — typically plywood, MDF or particleboard — moves less with moisture than solid wood.

§Substrate and veneer choice.

Plywood, MDF and chipboard are all common veneer bases because they are dimensionally stable and provide an even, level surface to glue to. When you choose veneer, you look at the grain pattern and lay the sheets against each other before anything is glued: does the pattern match, and does the colour and pattern flow in one across the joints? This dry layout is cheap to correct and impossible to change once the glue is set.

§Glue for veneer

Contact adhesive is the most common choice for veneering. It is applied to both surfaces and allowed to dry until the surfaces feel dry to the touch but are still tacky — typically after about 10-15 minutes at room temperature of 18-25 °C. As soon as veneer and substrate meet, they bond instantly without the need for clamps, and after a further short pressing time the seam has full strength within the next day. Alternatively, ordinary white wood glue (PVA) can be used, but it requires even pressure over the entire surface while it cures — so it is typically used together with a press.

§Pressing methods

For veneering with glue, which requires pressure during curing, several methods exist. A vacuum bag places the item in an airtight bag from which air is drawn out, so the surrounding air pressure presses veneer and substrate evenly together — even on curved or irregular shapes where clamps cannot reach. Cold pressing in a vise or hydraulic press, often with a shaped counter-plate, is used for flat or slightly curved items. Industrially, hot pressing is used, where heat and pressure are combined to cure the glue faster at high production volumes.

§Error sources and control

The most common errors are air pockets under veneer where the glue has not taken hold and veneer shift during pressing so the pattern no longer matches. Both typically arise because pressure or glue was not evenly distributed. Tap lightly over the finished surface and listen for a hollow sound — it reveals a bubble before it becomes a problem later.

§Post-processing

When the adhesive is fully cured, the surface is sanded carefully so it's not sanded through the thin veneer layer, and edges are trimmed or covered with edge strips so the sharp and fragile veneer edge is protected. From here, the work continues as with solid wood: sanding in increasing grits and finally oil, varnish, or wax.

Veneering is not about fooling the eye — it's about using the most beautiful wood where it does the most good on a construction that lasts.
