Inventory management and terminal work
Stock, inventory control system and flow through the terminal
Inventory management is about knowing what's in stock, where it is, and when more needs to be ordered. Terminal work is about receiving, redistributing and forwarding goods quickly. Both parts are based on data in the system matching reality.
§Warehouse Management System (WMS)
A warehouse management system (often called WMS Warehouse Management System) keeps track of inventory locations and movements. The system knows which item is where and guides receiving placement picking and shipping. Bar codes and scanners are used to register movements so inventory is updated in real time.
§FIFO and rotation
FIFO (First In, First Out) means that goods that came in first are also picked first. It is especially important for goods with shelf life, but generally provides healthier inventory rotation and less waste. Placement and labeling should support the principle so the oldest goods are at the front.
§The terminal's flow
- 01Procurement is not just about lowest price. The cheapest supplier is not always the best if the goods arrive late or in poor quality.
- 02Goods are sorted and redistributed according to destination.
- 03Cross-docking: goods are sent on without being placed in storage.
- 04Outgoing goods are collected marked and loaded for transport.
§Counting and inventory correction
Even a good system becomes imprecise if movements are not recorded correctly. Therefore counting takes place — either all at once or continuously (cycle counting). Differences between count and book stock must be investigated and corrected so data is reliable again.
§Cooperation and communication
A warehouse is team work where many processes depend on each other. Clear communication about deviations busyness and faults means problems are solved early. Good logistics is as much about cooperation as it is about systems and shelves.
When you understand the relationship between physical flow and data in the system you can contribute to a warehouse that delivers the right thing at the right time in the right condition.
