Wind turbines and heavy lift — crane operator in the green transition
From ordinary construction site to the largest cranes in the country
There is a big difference between hoisting a concrete element up a two-storey building and lifting a wind turbine tower over a hundred metres high or a nacelle weighing several hundred tons. Yet it is basically the same trade: assess the load know the crane's limits and operate the lift safely. Wind turbine and heavy lift work is just where the crane trade really becomes extreme.
§From house roof to windmill nacelle
Wind turbines are erected in sections: foundation tower sections nacelle (machine house) and finally the blades. Each section is heavy unwieldy to grab and must be placed millimeter-precisely at great height. This places different demands on setup clearance and crane size than an ordinary construction site lift — and it is precisely this part of the industry that uses some of the most powerful cranes that exist in Denmark.
§The very largest cranes
Danish crane companies have equipment that far exceeds ordinary mobile cranes. There are examples of mobile cranes used to dismantle wind turbines with a lifting capacity of 750 tons, and a few ring cranes in Denmark can lift over 1,000 tons — in some cases to working heights of over 200 metres. By comparison, a typical mobile crane on an ordinary building site operates in a completely different and more manageable lifting range.
§Co-lifting and extreme weather sensitivity
Large wind turbine components often require simultaneous lifting, where two cranes lift the same load at the same time and must be coordinated carefully — the weight distribution between the cranes must be calculated, not estimated. And because the blades have enormously flat, wind-catching surfaces, the weather is an even bigger factor than in ordinary lifts: even moderate wind can put a lift on pause for hours while waiting for a calmer weather window.

§A path into the green transition
As Denmark and the rest of Europe build more wind energy, both on land and at sea, comes the need for crane operators who can handle exactly these tasks. For an experienced crane operator, heavy lift and wind turbine installation are among the directions where professionalism, patience, and attention to detail are directly translated into building the green transition — literally, one lift at a time.
