A crane operator must know their machine their lifting equipment and their safety systems. These three things together determine what you can lift and whether it's safe. Here's the equipment you work with.
§Different crane types
There are many types of cranes. Mobile cranes drive on the road and set out support legs on site. Tower cranes rise high on building sites and remain in place throughout construction. Truck-mounted cranes are mounted behind a truck and are used for loading and unloading. Each type has its strengths its setup and its limits and part of the trade is knowing which crane fits the task.
§The load curve — the crane's limit
The most important number for a crane operator is not one number but a curve. A crane's lifting capacity depends on how far the arm reaches out and how high: the further out the less it can lift without losing stability. This relationship is described in the crane's load chart or load table. Reading and staying within the load curve is a basic competence — it is what separates a safe lift from one that tips the crane.

Between the hook and the load sits the lifting gear: straps, chains, shackles, yokes and lifting bands. All lifting gear has a marked load capacity and must be checked for damage before use. Attaching — securing the load so it hangs straight and safely — is an art in itself: a load hanging crooked or with gear that can slip is dangerous. The angle between the straps also affects the load, so the sharper the angle, the more each strap is loaded.

§Safety systems
Modern cranes have electronic safety systems to help you. The load limiter keeps an eye on how close you are to the limit, warns and can stop the lift if it becomes too heavy for the reach. Other systems monitor stability and movement. These systems are a help, not a replacement for your own judgment — you must never disable them to lift more than the crane can handle.
§Why inspection is life-critical
A wire that fails or a safety system that does not work can cost lives. Therefore cranes and lifting equipment are inspected regularly and before use. You do not use a crane or piece of equipment with a known fault and you report faults before they become accidents. Inspection is not bureaucracy — it is what keeps you and your colleagues alive.
