Specialties, career, and ways forward

Opportunities after journeyman certificate

When you are fully trained as a beautician several paths open. Some choose permanent employment others start for themselves and many specialize within an area they are passionate about.

§Where can you work?

  • 01Beauty and skincare salons
  • 02Wellness and spa departments at hotels and health resorts
  • 03Clinics with a focus on skin care
  • 04Own salon or self-employed business.
  • 05Sales and counseling from manufacturers of skincare and cosmetics

§Specialization

Many crane operators supplement with other lifting skills, most commonly a forklift certificate, but also certificates for other equipment. The broader toolkit of certificates you have, the more versatile an employee you become, and the more easily an employer can assign you to multiple different tasks — something that both increases job security and often wages.

§Becoming self-employed

If you dream of your own salon, you need to learn about economics, customer care, marketing and daily operations in addition to the professional side. Many start as employees to gain experience before starting for themselves.

§Further education and courses

You can build on your training with courses in new treatments and techniques. Some move toward teaching, management, or sales roles in the industry.

Skill comes with practice — but the good beautician never stops learning new things.
