History of the beauty trade
From antique skincare to modern salon
When you work as a beautician you stand in a tradition that is thousands of years old. People have always cared for skin face and body and you carry forward a craft that has always moved between wellbeing health and aesthetics.
§Beauty care through the ages
Already in ancient times, oils, waxes, and plant extracts were used to care for the skin and protect against sun and wind. Later, a proper trade developed where skin was treated professionally and products were mixed with knowledge of both raw materials and effects.
| Period | What happened |
|---|---|
| Antiquity | Oils, salves and scents are used for skin and body care as well as religious purposes |
| The Middle Ages | Herbs and plant-based blends are used for skin and healing |
| 1800-tallet | Growth of pharmacies and factory-produced creams and soaps |
| Tidlig 1900-tal | Beauty salons and the cosmetic industry emerge in cities |
| Last part of the 1900s | The craft becomes professionalized with real training and device treatments. |
| Today | Beautician as a vocational qualification with hygiene, skin knowledge and broad treatment offerings |
§From craft to vocational education
As knowledge of skin, products and equipment grew, there was a need for more uniform education. Today you learn both theory about skin structure and practical technique, so you can work professionally responsibly and advise your customers properly.
§The craft today.
Modern cosmetics is not just about making the customer look good but also understanding skin types, allergies and product content. You work with everything from facial treatments and skin analysis to hair removal, makeup and body treatments.
“A good result starts with a thorough skin analysis — not with the product.”
