Further and continuing education for beauticians
What you can build on your journeyman certificate — from courses to academy and self-employment
When you are fully trained as a beautician several doors open. You can become sharper at your craft specialize in certain treatments add management and business on top of the trade or move further in the education system. Here is the overview of what you can build on.
§Short courses and specialization
The quickest path to new knowledge is short courses. Within the service and beauty sector there is further training where you can improve at specific treatments, new technology or new products. Many suppliers also offer training and certifications in their equipment and methods. It is a good way to stay updated and expand what you can offer your customers.
- 01Short follow-up courses within the service sector (AMU track).
- 02Supplier courses and certificates in specific devices, products and methods.
- 03Specialization in niches such as specific skin or wellness treatments.
§Academy and higher education tracks
If you want to go further in the formal education system, a vocational education can provide access to higher educations. Many skilled workers build on with an academy education often taken part-time alongside work, for example in management, sales or running your own business. From there the path can continue toward a professional bachelor's degree if you want to go further. Check the current access requirements for the specific education you are aiming for — they can vary.
| Direction | What it gives you | Typical shape |
|---|---|---|
| Short courses | Sharper craftsmanship and new treatments | Days to weeks, often alongside a job |
| Academy education | Business management sales | Part-time, on top of professional experience |
| Professional bachelor | Broader advanced competencies | Full-time or part-time |
§The path to self-employed
For many beauticians opening their own clinic is the most important development. It is not an education but a step that requires you to learn to run a business: economics prices marketing rules and customer care. Here an academy education in management or entrepreneurship is often a strong foundation and many combine it with pure experience from having been employed first.
§To teach and pass on the subject
With experience and possibly a pedagogical component some can move towards teaching — for example at a technical school or in an industry or supplier context. It is a way to pass on your craft and at the same time develop a completely new side of yourself.
“The journeyman's certificate is a launching pad, not a final destination — what you build on it shapes the rest of your career.”
