Specialties and career as an industrial technician
From machine specialty and production specialty to CAD/CAM, programming and further paths
Industrial technician training is a trade with depth and once the foundation is in place you can specialise. The training contains two main specialties and from there several paths open. Here are some of them.
§The machine specialty
The machine specialty goes in depth with single parts and prototypes: making precise often complicated parts usually in small numbers and with high demands for accuracy. Here the understanding of material tool clamping and measurement is absolutely central and the work requires patience and care. It suits the one who enjoys getting a difficult part exactly right.
§The production specialty
The production specialty is aimed at series production and production control: making many identical parts efficiently, with stable quality and good utilization of machines and time. Here planning, optimization and overview count more, and you think in flow and productivity as well as the individual part. It suits someone who likes to get an entire production to work.
§CAD/CAM and programming
An important direction in both specializations is CAD/CAM: drawing the part in a CAD program and letting a CAM program generate the machining program for the CNC machine. The one who masters this can take an idea from drawing to finished part and program complex machining that would be impossible to perform by hand. It is a competency that is increasingly in demand.

§Automation, Robots and New Technology
Modern workshops are increasingly linking machines together with robots that load and unload items so machines can run longer without supervision. A technician who understands both machining and automation is valuable because they can make the technology work in practice. The profession is moving and those who want to learn follow along.
§Further education and management
With experience the path can go towards production manager or further education e.g. towards technician or engineer directions. The industrial technician's thorough understanding of how things are actually made is a strong foundation to build on — whether you stay at the machine or move towards planning and management.
