Safety, tolerances and quality at the machine workshop

How you work safely with rotating machines and what it means to deliver within tolerance

Safety and quality go hand in hand at a machine workshop. The machines have great power and rotating parts, and a part that does not meet specifications is worthless. Both require care and respect for the rules.

§Rotating machines and caught clothing

The greatest danger on a lathe and milling machine is rotating parts that can catch clothing, hair, gloves or jewellery and pull a hand along. Therefore you wear tight-fitting clothing, long hair is put up and gloves are usually not used on rotating machinery. You must never touch a rotating item or tool and you do not remove chips with your fingers while the machine is running.

§Chips, splinters, and eyes

Chips are sharp and often glowing, and they can fly. Therefore, eye protection is a fixed requirement during machining. Chips are removed with a hook or brush, never with your hands, and you clear them away before they pile up. A single chip in the eye can cost your sight, so eye protection is not negotiable.

§Clamping and heavy workpieces

A poorly clamped item can be thrown out of the machine with great force. So clamping is checked before the machine starts. Heavy items are lifted with proper techniques or aids so the back does not take damage. Workshop safety is about both the machine's power and the body's limits.

§Tolerances — language of quality

Quality in the trade is measured in tolerances: how much a measurement may deviate from the desired one and still be okay. A tolerance can be quite narrow, and a part outside tolerance does not fit together with the other parts it is to be assembled with. Therefore, it is not enough for a part to 'almost' hit the target — it must be within tolerance every time.

§Target points

Delivering within tolerance requires that you measure and check. You measure the first part thoroughly and check continuously during series production, because machine and tool can drift over time. The measuring equipment must be correct, and you measure in a calm, consistent way so your numbers are reliable. Quality control is what makes quality something you can prove, not just claim.

§Order as safety and quality

A tidy workplace is both safer and gives better quality. Tools lying in wrong places measuring instruments that get dropped and shavings piling up lead to injury and errors. Order is not cleanliness for cleanliness's sake — it is a way of working that prevents both accidents and rejected parts.

In this trade a part is either within tolerance or scrap — there is nothing in between.
