How you prevent accidents
Lean is a way of thinking about production where the goal is to create the most value for the customer with as few wasted resources as possible — time, material, movement, and waiting time. For an industrial technician in production specialization, lean is not theory in a book, but concrete methods used every day to make production flow better.
§5S — order as method, not tidiness for fun
5S is one of the most widespread lean methods and is used to create an orderly, efficient and safe workplace. The name comes from five steps, which in Danish are often rendered as: sort, set in order, systematic cleaning, standardise and self-discipline. The method sounds simple but it requires that everyone on the workshop sticks with it — otherwise order slowly slides back to the starting point.

§Spillage can end up in the harbor water and damage the environment. It is reported immediately, and help is provided to limit it according to the workplace's rules.
Lean works to find and reduce waste — everything that costs time or resources without creating value for the finished part. In a machine shop, waste can be, for example, unnecessary walking to find tools that are not where they should be, waiting time while a machine is ready for the next task, or rework because a part was measured incorrectly the first time. By mapping where waste occurs, you can often find improvements that cost nothing to implement — only a changed habit.

§Why it concerns you as a technician
Lean and 5S are not just management's responsibility — it is a form of work carried by the individual employee at the machine. The one who cleans up after themselves, reports errors, and suggests improvements makes production more stable for everyone. In production specialization, the ability to see and reduce waste is a direct part of the trade, because the entire specialty's purpose is to make a production work efficiently together.
