The history of trade — from marketplace to e-commerce
How trade became modern sales
Trade is one of mankind's oldest activities. Ever since people began to exchange goods with each other, there has been a need for someone who could get the right thing, at the right price, at the right time. That is precisely what you learn in trade education.
§The merchant and the market
In the old days the shopkeeper was the centre of the town. He bought goods in large batches, stored them and sold them on in smaller quantities. He knew his customers, gave credit to those he trusted, and his reputation was the foundation of the whole business. The personal relationship was everything.
§Mass production and chains
With industrialisation came mass production and goods became cheaper and more uniform. Shop chains grew and could push prices down by buying in bulk. Purchasing and logistics became a science in itself: having the right thing on the shelf without tying up too much money in inventory.
§Digital commerce
Today much of the trade happens online. The customer can compare prices in seconds and order from around the world. This places new demands on you: good advice fast delivery and an experience that makes the customer choose you. But the core is the same as the merchant's — creating value and trust.
| Period | Characteristic | It is still about |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace | Barter and personal trading | Trust between buyer and seller |
| The merchant era | Bulk purchases, retail sales | To get the right product at the right price |
| The age of chains | Bulk purchases and lower prices | Effective procurement and logistics. |
| E-commerce. | Online sales, marketing, customer service, logistics | Good experience and quick delivery |
When you understand that development you also see why both customer understanding numbers and logistics are part of your trade today.
