Healthy Work Environment at the Workbench
Ergonomics, eyes, lungs and hands — how you look after yourself in a trade with fine details.
A goldsmith workshop looks peaceful but the body works hard in a quiet way. You sit long in the same position squint at small details and use your hands precisely hour after hour. If you do not take the working environment seriously from the start that quiet work can wear on you over time. Here it is worth building good habits early.
§Ergonomics: position is your most important habit.
Because you sit for a long time at the bench, your working posture means everything. A well-adjusted chair, a bench at the right height, and good placement of work close to your eyes prevent pain in neck, shoulders, and back. Change position, stand up, and stretch at regular intervals — even small breaks make a big difference over a work day.
§Beware of the eyes
You work with small items and strong light, and you use a magnifying glass or magnification for long periods. Good, glare-free lighting and regular shifts of focus away from close work prevent tired eyes and headaches. When grinding, drilling and hammering you protect your eyes against splinters with safety glasses.
§Lungs and extraction
Several processes in the trade produce smoke dust or fumes — for example when soldering polishing and working with chemicals. Effective extraction at source and good room ventilation are crucial so you don't inhale it. For processes where extraction is not enough respiratory protection is included.
§Heat, fire and chemistry

- 02Acids and chemicals for cleaning and pickling: store them correctly, use gloves and eye protection, and know the safety data sheets.
- 03Polishing: use extraction and avoid loose clothing and hair near rotating discs.
- 04Hearing: for longer noisy processes hearing protection is necessary.
§The hands — your most important tool
Your hands are what the entire trade rests on. Sharp tools, rotating discs and hot items can cause cuts and burns, and repetitive grips can strain tendons and joints over time. Sharp tools are actually safer than dull ones, because you don't need to use as much force — and varied grips take the strain off your hands.
§Chemistry in everyday life requires a system
You'll be handling substances that need to be treated with respect. A good workshop keeps track of which chemicals are used, how they're stored, and what to do if something goes wrong. Knowing the labels and safety data sheets is not nerdy — it's part of the craft.
