Gold and silversmith

As a goldsmith and silversmith you create jewellery and objects in precious metals. You shape rings necklaces bracelets and bowls in gold silver and platinum — sometimes as unique commissions other times in small series. You become craftsperson and designer in one and the finished result is something people wear and treasure for many years.

§What do you do in everyday life?

A working day typically takes place at a small jeweller's bench with fine tools. You saw, file, solder, hammer and polish until the piece fits precisely. You set gemstones, straighten rings to size and repair heirlooms that customers bring in. It requires patience, a steady hand and an eye for detail — because here every tenth of a millimetre counts.

§How do you get started?

You start with a basic course at a vocational school and then find an apprenticeship, for example with a goldsmith or at a workshop. During the main course you alternate between school and practice, and as an apprentice you get apprentice wages while learning the trade. At the workshop you come close to experienced smiths who show you the techniques.

§The way forward

As fully trained you can work at a jewellery workshop in a jewellery shop or at a company that produces jewellery. Many specialise in for example stone setting design or repair and some eventually open their own workshop. If you want to continue you can build on with design or materials education.
