Filigree and granulation — the oldest decorative techniques
Wire and grain of precious metal that has adorned people for millennia
Some of the most beautiful details in a piece of jewellery are also some of the oldest. Filigree and granulation are two decoration techniques based on extreme precision with heat and metal, and which have followed the gold and silversmith trade for thousands of years. As a student you encounter them early – either as something you practice yourself or as something you learn to recognize and repair on older jewellery.
§Filigree — patterns of twisted wire
Filigree is the art of shaping fine, often twisted wire of gold or silver into spirals, leaves and other patterns, which are then soldered together or on a base of the same metal. The name comes from the Latin filum (thread) and granum (grain), and the technique requires that the wire is uniform and that the solder joints are invisible so the pattern appears as one coherent work rather than separate pieces.
§Granulation — grains on a surface
Granulation is related, but instead uses microscopically small, round grains of precious metal that are fused to an underlying surface in a specific pattern. The grains must be uniform in size and sit completely securely, without flowing together or falling off — it requires great control over the temperature, because the grains and base must reach exactly the point where they melt together without the grains losing their round shape.

§Why the techniques are still used
Although modern tools and machines have made much jewellery making faster filigree and granulation are still handwork from start to finish. That is precisely what makes them sought-after today: a filigree piece or granulated surface cannot be mass-produced the same way as a cast or machine-worked piece. The techniques are used today both in reconstructions of historical jewellery and in modern design where classical patterns are combined with contemporary form.
At school, you often encounter techniques in small exercises before you combine them with the rest of the profession's basic techniques like sawing, filing, and soldering. Once you've gotten your fingers to shape the wire and your eye to place the grains symmetrically, it opens a whole world of decorative possibilities that cannot be achieved with machine work alone.
