Men's haircut has become a specialty within the specialty: customers today demand everything from classic short skin fade to long textured top, and expectations for precision in transitions are high. While a classic women's haircut often deals with shape and movement in long lengths, men's haircut largely deals with sharp transitions, control of the clipper's guards and interaction between sides, top and beard.

§Fade and skin fade

A fade is a gradual transition from very short at the nape and temples up toward a longer top without a visible 'edge' in between. A skin fade goes all the way down to skin at the sides while a low mid or high fade indicates where on the head the transition starts. The key to a clean fade is working with multiple guard sizes in sequence and letting each transition blend smoothly into the next instead of jumping from one number directly to a noticeably shorter one.

§Texture and styling

At the top, work is often done with texturizing scissors or point cutting to give movement and lightness without removing too much length. For styling, typically matte pomade or wax is used for a natural textured finish while glossy pomade gives a more classic, smooth look. Blow-drying with a round brush or flat brush is used to style the top in the desired direction and give lift at the roots before the product is applied.
