Photography is a broad trade and two photographers can have very different working days. Some stand in a studio every day others travel the world. Part of your development is finding out what kind of photographer you want to be.
§Specialties in the trade
Most photographers find over time one or two areas they become really good at. Specializing makes it easier to stand out and charge a good price for the work.
| Specialty | What you do |
|---|---|
| Portrait | People, families, actors and company profiles |
| Advertising and product | Goods and brands, often in studio with precise lighting |
| Wedding and event | Documentation of busy days with high pace |
| Press and reportage | News and stories where you capture the moment |
| Architecture and interior | Buildings and rooms where lines and light are crucial |
§Employed or self-employed
You can become employed in a photo company, a media house, a web shop, or a marketing department. Or you can start for yourself. As an independent you are not just a photographer — you are also a salesman, accountant, and customer service. Many start employed to gain experience and customer contacts before going independent.
§Keep yourself sharp
The photography trade is developing rapidly. New cameras new image editing programmes and new ways to share images appear all the time. The photographers who stay in the trade are those who keep learning — both the technical and the creative.
